It really seems like you can get a nice high ground setup in this fight, but considering where Orivand and his mages start, it's pretty tough to take advantage. The 2 swordsmen and new Silent Monk are downstairs, but damage on them is much less important than getting rid of the mages and getting some control on Orivand as fast as possible.

However, killing him early or leaving him be doesn't change much overall, he simply is or is not in that later location.
